The Battle of the 38th parallel
The peaceful silence of June 25, 1950 that rested over the Korean Peninsula was shattered by the chatter from machine guns and the whistle of artillery shells bombarding South Korean cities. The battle known as The Battle of The 38th Parallel, has officially started the Korean War. South Korea has been invaded by Kim Il Sung and the North Korean military. The South Korean army had no assistance whatsoever. As a result, most of South Korea was lost and was taken under North Korean influence. The goal of the Korean War was to unite North and South Korea under one governmental influence, either communist or republic. Thus, The Battle of the 38th Parallel, as well as the Korean War, was started. 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People's Army (NKPA) invaded the rest of South Korea after The Battle of the 38th Parallel. The outcome of The Battle of the 38th Parallel worked against both the North and South. South Korea was, for the most part, taken over by North Korea but North Korea had to face the forces of the US as well as the UN.
U.S. President Truman authorized the use of Amercan air, land, and sea forces on June 27, 1950. The next week, the United Nations declared the invasion of South Korea an act of aggression on the behalf of South Korea and requested and mandated that all NKPA troops must leave South Korea. After Kim Il Sung refused, forty-one countries sent supplies, weapons, and troops to aid South Korea. In total, ninety percent of South Korean weapons and troops came from UN sources. North Korea was supported by China and Russia. Both China and Russia sent troops and weapons. The Battle of the 38th Parallel was lost by the South Korean People's Army but in the end, the war was not won. After the war ended with a stalemate, the 38th Parallel was established as a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). It can be seen clearly by anyone passing by the battlefield.
